Bug Reports
Many people miss important information when filing a bug report. Please check the following before submitting a bug.
- Error message?
-
If you’re getting an error message, please include the message in full when reporting the problem. Saying "I get an error" is not enough - we need to see the exact text of the message.
- Latest version?
-
Please go to the Help>About (Windows/Linux) or Anki>About (Mac) menu and check the version you’re using. If you’re not using the latest version mentioned at the top right of the Anki website, you should upgrade first. The system-provided version of Anki on Linux often lags behind the latest version.
- AnkiDroid?
-
AnkiDroid has a separate issue tracker, as it is developed by a separate group of volunteers. Please report AnkiDroid issues there.
- Restarted?
-
Please try restarting Anki. If that doesn’t work, please try restarting your computer. Sometimes issues are caused by system instability rather than a specific problem with Anki.
- Checked the database?
-
Sometimes Anki decks can develop problems. Please go to Tools>Advanced>Check DB and see if the problem goes away after the database is checked. If the problem goes away but comes back again later, then it’s worth reporting.
- Directly caused by a plugin?
-
If the error message you’re getting says there’s an error in a plugin, you need to report the issue to the plugin author instead. You can usually find the plugin author by going to Settings>Plugins>Open Plugin Folder, locating the plugin (a file ending with .py), and opening it in a text editor. Plugin authors usually leave their name and email near the top of the file. If no contact information is available, the plugin author is not supporting the plugin, and your only choice is to disable it.
- Indirectly caused by a plugin?
-
Sometimes plugins can cause issues without it being obvious that the plugin is the cause. If you have installed any plugins, please go to Settings>Plugins>Startup and disable them, then restart Anki. If the problems go away, you can selectively reenable your plugins to narrow down which one is causing problems, then report the problem to the plugin author as mentioned above.
- Specific to a deck?
-
If you create a new deck and perform the same actions, does the problem persist or go away? Please mention so in your issue report.
- Syncing issue?
-
Please make sure you have read the syncing FAQs.
- Media syncing issue?
-
Please make sure you have read the syncing media docs, including the problem-solving section.
- Problems displaying foreign text?
-
Please go to Edit>Card Layout>Fields while reviewing and make sure the fields are set to a a font appropriate for the language you are studying.
- Searched the issue tracker?
-
If you still need to report a problem, please visit the issue tracker and search to see if you can find any similar issues.
- Restored from backup?
-
Anki takes a backup of your deck each time you open it. Please see the deck errors page for more info.
If you’ve checked all the above, please report a new issue. Please start the report with the following line, replacing <computer type> with Windows, OSX (Mac) or Linux as appropriate:
I have checked the points on the help page. I'm using <computer type>.
If your bug report does not include the above line, we will just send you back to this page on the assumption you have not read it yet, so please make sure to include the above line.
